Patients in Chicago are recovering rapidly.
An experimental antiviral drug has been given to 125 patients in Chicago as part of a study to treat coronavirus. It is being shown to rapidly dissipate fevers and respiratory symptoms, allowing most patients to be discharged in under a week, according to a doctor overseeing the study by the University of Chicago medicine team.
“The best news is that most of our patients have already been discharged, which is great. We’ve only had two patients perish,” said Kathleen Muilaine, the University of Chicago infectious disease specialist overseeing the study.
“Most of our patients are severe and most of them are leaving at six days, so that tells us duration of therapy doesn’t have to be 10 days. We have very few that went out to 10 days, maybe three,” she added.
Caution still exists among many in the medical field including Dr. Anthony Fauci who said that anecdotal evidence cannot take the place of clinical trials, and that clinical trials have not been conducted on this new experimental drug.
